Making an underground tech house beat starts with the basics: kick, clap, open hat and bass. The underground tech house sound is very textural, so you want to select samples that already have lots of character. You want a deep kick drum with a relatively soft transient. I like to get both center and wide claps and open hats. Familiar tech house sounds for the center channel. More textural sounds for the side channel.

Keep it simple with the bass for underground tech house: a sub with a couple harmonics playing a simple line over 1 or 2 bars. You’re just looking to create a vibe and roll.

Add some percussion motifs to give your underground tech house track a signature sound and groove. Add some drum accents and some top layers with a 16th note swing and you’ve got yourself an underground tech house groove.

I let Ableton’s follow launch trick create some vocal chops.

You need a break vocal with some dude talking about music. I found Dr Dre talking about discovering Eminem. And when he said, “What the fuck and who the fuck is that?” I immediately knew the structure of the track. In the first break I’d have the pay off vocal, and then roll into the drop. In the second break, I’d have the pay off vocal triggering the drop. Drops tend to be 32 bars in tech house, so after the two breaks and drops, it was just about making an intro and outro.

Now multiply the number of track we have by two. That’s roughly how many effects we’ll to keep the arrangement interesting over time. You need up effects to build tension and anticipate key moments. Down effects to release tension and carry momentum. And spot effects for the short attention span of your listeners.

I actually programmed all the effects in the track and you can get the Massive patches and Sampler instruments along with the remix stems and all the dry/wet samples I used for free with this link:

But after a couple endless days of mixing and feelings of deep inadequacy, you’ll end up with a sick underground tech house track.

This track was inspired by Eli Brown – Blow Up The Speakers. This tutorial is aimed at beginners starting at ground zero. Referencing your favorite tracks is the best way to learn. This tutorial shows you how to do that so you can learn and progress quickly.

Let’s start with drums. Tech house drums focus on the core beat: kick, clap, open hat and bass. The is the basis for any house production or tech house production.

Find a kick drum sample with some deep low end. Usually the kick is about an 8th note long with the fundamental peaking at -6db.

I got some wide clap samples to make room for the bass in the center channel. I have a top clap layer and a bottom clap layer.

A basic Roland 909 open hat will do. But I also layered a wide closed hat for some extra width and presence.

I used a 303-style bass line but programmed the patch in Massive.

You can download the bass patch and all samples here: https://goo.gl/aACziJ

Throw in some top-end and mid-range percussion loops to add some 16th note syncopation and groove. Spend some time finding loops or sounds that fit the vibe of your track. Consider things like clean or crunchy, dry or wet, harsh or soft. And don’t forget the obligatory ride layer.

All we need now are some vocals and we basically have a song. I just searched on Splice and found two vocals that worked together. Try to combine vocal samples that are different in some way: male and female, or spoken and sung, or clean and chopped.

Create a break section by high passing the low end and opening the filter on a catchy element like a chord or vocal.

Then create a build with more high passing and a 909 snare roll. And you gotta end the build with the vocal.

If your break and build flow nicely into the drop then you’re good to go. Just start structuring the song. Here’s the way I did it:

30 second DJ lead in
30 second intro break and build
1 minute drop
30 second break and build
1 minute drop
1 minute main break
1 minute outro drop
1 minute DJ lead out

Add some up FX, some down FX and spot FX to keep things interesting and moving through the track.

Up FX will build tension, down FX will release tension. And spot effects will create special moments of ear candy. As Solomun says, “Music is moments.”

Also, put some edits at the end of every 8 bars in the drop. Usually the halfway point of the drop has the biggest edit. These give momentary breaks during the drop and really help drive the track along. I just jumped the bass up an octave and slapped on some reverb. You can carry the momentum of the edits over the bar with some down FX and spot FX.

And of course, throw in some vinyl, mechanical, or natural ambience textures.
